Fired Twice Because She Had Cancer
I heard this story yesterday and I must admit that it really pulled at my heartstrings. You see, not only am I someone that was diagnosed with cancer almost 4 years ago, I am also a Human Resources Manager who understands the value of an employee. With a compromised economy, people these days are stretched thin many times doing their own job and possibly that of someone else. It is why it was hard for me to not see this from both perspectives. A good worker is immeasurable which is why it is vital that they report to work and perform their assigned duties. Fortunately in my case, my staff and supervisor rallied together to fill the gap during the 9 months I took off of work to undergo numerous surgeries and chemotherapy. I’ve also been hearing about a new trend where employees donate their unused vacation time to those who may be dealing with a chronic illness. Like you, I am saddened that this debate is even taking place. Our jobs should be protected and we should be supported when we are sick. So what are your thoughts on this issue?
